Collaborative Design/Build Delivery brings critical student housing to SDSU in just 20 months.
The OCMI Team’s involvement with SDSU’s newest campus housing facility began with development of the RFQ/RFP to select the Design/Build team. The design process for the $130 million complex was then completed in just ten (10) months. Utilizing the campus’s successful approach to design/build, Collaborative Design/Build, construction lasted for 20 months.
Surrounded by existing campus facilities and with construction beginning during the school year, a phased approach and close monitoring of the construction schedule was critical to meet the aggressive time line. The team worked towards meeting the 20-month construction time line by incorporating “The Big Room” which is a central office consisting of the OCMI Team, general contractor, and all subconsultants. This collaborative approach allowed the team to make quick, real-time decisions and foster transparency during construction.
This new 170,000 SF facility will meet the ever-growing need for new student campus housing for 800+ students and includes a market and coffee shop, multipurpose rooms, faculty offices, study areas, lounges, and a community kitchen.
