Endings Bring New Beginnings
The last major piece of SDCCU Stadium (formerly Qualcomm Stadium, Jack Murphy Stadium, San Diego Stadium) came down today to make way for the new San Diego State University Aztec Football Stadium and associated site development for future construction in Mission Valley. To minimize the impact on air quality in the surrounding area, the University chose to break up the 70,561-seat stadium built in 1967 rather than implode it. A team is on-site every day crushing concrete from the structure to be repurposed for fill and road base throughout the site and much of the material is being reclaimed by demolition contractors to reduce waste on the project.
