O’Connor provided on-site construction management, scheduling, and cost estimating services for the new, $25 million state-of-the-art student housing project at Gallaudet University. The Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) Residence Hall provides student housing for the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center. The project is located on Gallaudet’s Washington, DC campus, bordered by four distinct Northeast neighborhoods: Ivy City, NoMa, the H Street Corridor and Trinidad.

The federally funded project is a three‐story, 68,000 SF residence hall divided up into two distinct wings, oriented north and south and connected by a single story monumental entrance called the “Eagles Nest”. Each wing has two extensions housing up to 40 students each (160 beds total) with common facilities such as study rooms, laundry facilities, TV lounges and shared bathroom facilities. Faculty apartments are provided on the 1st floor with office space for Resident Advisors on at each wing of each student occupied level.

The basement and first floor podium structure is constructed of reinforced concrete supported by a complex foundation system that included 88 caissons and oversized grade beams. The 2nd and 3rd floors are of wood frame construction, with the entire building cladded in combination of brick, glass and metal panels. Design elements focus on DeafSpace requirements and a vibrant atmosphere for visual learning and socializing and sustainability.
